One of the best discussions of ancient mathematics is
Dominic Olivastro's book, Ancient Puzzles, Bantam Books,
available in German as Das Chinesische Dreieck, Droemer Knaur.
Olivastro explains many ancient "numbering" systems,
including that of the Egyptians based on the
Papyrus of Ah`mose (Ahmes), known also as the Rhind-Papyrus.

In ancient Egyptian Mathematics there was NO zero,
hence 365 was written the same as 3650
i.e. as

three symbols of a certain kind
six symbols of a certain kind
and five symbols of a certain kind

Later in Pharaonic culture, specific symbol
for ones, tens, hundreds, thousands etc. were used.

However, these symbols do not appear to be used consistenly,
so that e.g. there is a an ivory piece attributed to Narmer
which Egyptologists incorrectly interpret to mean
that Narmer took the incredible number of 120,000 prisoners
together with booty of 400,000 cattle and 1,422,000 sheep
numbers so high that the above interpretation by the "experts"
should have raised great suspicion
about their ability to read such documents.
