 Star Realms
of Pharaonic Dynasties of the Old Kingdom of Egypt
This analysis is presented in calendric and astronomical detail
starting at DYNASTIES, but look at this simple overview first.
Manetho lists the length of rule of Egyptian Pharaohs. As Eusebius wrote
"all are astronomy". Each Pharaoh was assigned a "star realm"
which was defined by heliacal rising and setting stars.

The missing period of about 37 years-days here is a consequence of precession and is a metonic multiple of 37 x 76 years ( = 2812), since Manetho is writing this list in 304 BC, 2812 years after 3117 BC, the start of the calendar. We know that precession advances 1 degree in 72 years but Manetho apparently used the figure of 1 degree per 76 years.
This is why the "star" sums of Manetho for the Old Kingdom add up to 1497 years rather than 1460 years , i.e. the expected correct length of the Sothic year.
