SUMERIAN AKKADIAN AGUSHAYA HYMN
SIMILARITY TO LATVIAN DAINAS

The German Oriental scholar W. von Soden
wrote his Ph.D. dissertation on the Agushaya Hymn,
transcribed 40 years later by Brigitte Groneberg
in Untersuchungen zum Hymnisch-epischen Dialekt
der Altbabylonischen Literarischen Texte,
University of Münster, Germany, 1971.

This hymn has direct correlates in the Latvian DAINAS,
which P. Einhorn 300 years ago called
"strange songs to God", i.e. peculiares hymnos deorum.

Indeed, the Latvian even tells us the syllabic meter of
these Akkadian songs, which runs long-short, long-short, long-short,
long-short, long-short, long-short, long-short-long
in the accent of the individual syllables.

Hence, the initial lines of the Agushaya hymn read
(using Groneberg's transcription) as:

lu-na-i-id shu-ur-bu-ta
i-ni-li 'qa-ra-at-ta (Line 3) bu-uk-ra-at

In Latvian meter the first three words could be - speculatively:
lu-na i-id shaur-bu-ta
Translation: The Moon enters the narrowness [of the eclipse]
in the modern Latvian Dainas this is found as:
LAIMA IEIET SUDRABOTA

In Latvian meter the second and third lines could be:
Ja-ni li-guo ra-at-ta bu-uk-ra-at-a
In Latvian: Jani (En.Lil) ligo Rata pakresla
Translation: The New Year begins in the shadowed Sun.
This could be the eclipse of December 25, 3117 BC.

Such a similar Line is in fact evidenced in the Latvian Dainas
In Dainas 34014 and 33956 (4 variants) where we find, e.g.
Tec, Saulite, sudrabota viz.Laime seja sudrabinu

At Line 14, Groneberg's transcription is
i-lu ù shar-ri i-ga-a-ash zi-ik-ru-tu-ush!-sha

Latvian meter and the Latvian word iekritushi ("have fallen into")
might give the following syllabic divisions
i-li-u sar-ri i-ga-a-as-zi ik-ru-tu-ush!-sha ki-ru-gu

This text in Latvian is perhaps:
IELU [Milky Way] sarguoshie iekritushi kroka

The English translation would be:
The Milky Way protectors have fallen into heaven's crease.

The above interpretations are very speculative, but there is liitle doubt about the similarity of the Agushaya Hymn of the Akkadians and verses of the Latvian Dainas.
