Ancient Signs

The Alphabet & the Origins of Writing

My new print & ebook
shows that modern alphabets are based on ancient alphabets rooted in syllabic scripts of the ancient world (Sumer, Egypt, Iran, Anatolia, Crete, Cyprus)

LexiLine - A Renaissance in Learning

The German Oriental scholar
W. von Soden
wrote his Ph.D. dissertation
on the Agushaya Hymn,
transcribed 40 years later
by Brigitte Groneberg
Untersuchungen zum Hymnisch-epischen Dialekt
der Altbabylonischen Literarischen Texte
University of Münster, Germany, 1971.

This hymn has direct correlates
in the Latvian DAINAS,

which P. Einhorn
300 years ago called

"strange songs to God",
peculiares hymnos deorum.

the Latvian Dainas
even tell us the syllabic meter of
these Akkadian songs, which runs
long-short, long-short,
long-short, long-short,
long-short, long-short, long-short-long
in the accent of the individual syllables.

Hence, the initial lines
of the Agushaya hymn read
(using Groneberg's transcription) as:

lu-na-i-id   shu-ur-bu-ta
i-ni-li  'qa-ra-at-ta

In Latvian meter
the first words could be read
 - speculatively -
lu-na    i-id   shaur-bu-ta

Similar lines are evidenced in Latvian Dainas
34014 and 33956 (4 variants)
where we find, e.g.
"Tec, Saulīte, sudrabota"
"Laime sēja sudrabiņu"

In Latvian meter
the second and third lines could be
- speculatively:

Ja-ni li-guo ra-at-ta bu-uk-ra-at-a

In Latvian possibly
Jāni (En.Lil) līgo ??rotā

Similar to lines of the Agushaya Hymn above
is the first line of Latvian Daina 54283

Juoņa dīnā saule rūtoj, rūtuo rūtuo!
"On St. John's Day (Midsummer) the Sun rotates"

Also similar to the Agushaya Hymn above
are lines in Daina 54284 where we can read

Jāņu rītā gaisma ausa,
Sudrabota saule lēca
"on the morning of New Year's Day
(Midsummer, St. John's Eve)
the silvery Sun rose"

and Daina 54825
which has

Rotājies, tu saulīt,
Tu rotāji, es rotāju:

That means essentially,
"turn Sun, you turn, and I turn"
